The Do's & Don'ts of Wallpaper

Wallpaper is back! It has been revived from the stale state it use to inhabit to one of a fun, vibrant and a collectively cool aesthetic. Since its revival it has become quite a staple in new homes to help liven up a space, and we are here to give you the do’s and don’ts when using this technique.

Do start with a plan!

Even though you have watched a YouTube video on how to install wallpaper and it looks like something you could do, it does get tricky, so always start with a plan. Measure out your space and make sure you have enough rolls to fill your entire area and more. If you are going with a paper that has a pattern, then sometimes you need more to line the rolls up correctly.

Don’t forget to prep the walls beforehand!

Make sure to clean your walls thoroughly as well as fill in any holes and sand those down to a smooth finish. If you don’t have a clean surface then the paper will show bumps and any rough surface underneath, and who wants that?

Do Start Small!

To help you get the hang of wallpapering start with a smaller space, like a foyer or powder room. In doing so you alleviate the stress of being overwhelmed by a huge project that is harder than you may have originally thought.

Don’t mix too many bold patterns!

Even though bold patterns can be fun, having them on all walls can be tough to stomach, as well as mixing them with more bold patterns in furniture or décor. Keep the bold patterns to a smaller section of space, like an accent wall! Accent walls draw your eye and give you a key feature to play off of in your room décor.

Do use wallpaper to define spaces.

Wallpaper can be a great tool to help define open spaces. If you have an open concept home and want to differentiate the foyer from the living space, then wallpaper can be just the tool for you!

Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

As simple as some may think it is, wallpaper is hard. Lining up seams, getting all the bubbles out and lining up patterns can be a bit overwhelming for most, so don’t be afraid to ask for help from a professional. Also don’t get discouraged by this either, most installers would be willing to give you some helpful tips if you want to tackle another project by yourself in the future!

Do have fun!

Wallpaper is supposed to be fun and creative and gives another dimension to your space, so don’t take it too seriously! Do a fun pattern on an accent wall or in a powder room, or my personal favorite, above trim detail! Decorating your home is an expression of you so be sure to make a statement that feels authentic to you!
